English Language

As you are aware, English Language is the cornerstone for success at NIS. The majority of our lessons, across all subject areas, are conducted in English. Additionally, almost all of our examinations and those from Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE / AS / A level) require a high level of English competency.

The process of language acquisition is developmental. It begins at birth and develops throughout childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Usually, by the time a child starts school they have some grasp of the basic elements of spoken language. This has usually been achieved via the mechanism of day-to-day language exposure from parents, friends and multimedia. This process of language learning is intrinsically linked with a child's growth in terms of knowledge and understanding. Therefore, language is an essential component in the cognitive development process.

Therefore, as a department, we strive to ensure that your son or daughter has every opportunity to succeed in the subject. The timetable provision for English is significantly more than any other subject. At NIS we follow a modified version of the CIE Primary and Secondary 1 English curriculum. During these timetabled lessons students are regularly exposed to all the elements of the English Language curriculum. English follows the CIE philosophy and is divided into five 'strands', which in turn are further subdivided into 'sub-strands'. The five strands and sub-strands are:

STRAND 1 - Phonics, spelling and vocabulary

STRAND 2 - Grammar and punctuation

• Reading
• Writing

STRAND 3 - Reading

• Fiction and poetry
• Non-fictionr

STRAND 4 - Writing

• Fiction
• Non-fiction
• Presentation

STRAND 5 - Speaking and listening

As a department, the whole team is committed to providing the building-blocks that your son or daughter needs to succeed in an English-medium educational environment. Therefore, we appreciate the help and support that you give your son or daughter in their pursuit to master the English language. Since the majority of our children are 'second language learners' we recommend this website to give parents practical ideas to assist children with their language development.

The NIS English Language Department supports the mission and vision of the school through its contributions to 'hidden curriculum'. We aim to develop the holistic role of an academic subject through a range of exciting competitions such as Spelling Bee, ICAS, Public Speaking, Poetry Writing and Story Writing. These prove to be motivational and popular events amongst our students who have the opportunity to showcase their talents in spoken and written English.

We also encourage our senior students, particularly through the NIS Community Service initiative to act as cross age peer tutors. Researchers found significant beneficial effects on the English Language achievement of tutors (Rekrut 1992) tutees (Palincsar and Brown 1986; Wheldall and Mettem 1985; Wheldall and Colmar 1990; Giesecke, et al. 1993; and Barbetta, et al. 1991).
