Community Service

In Grade 11 and 12 we expect our senior students to take greater responsibility within the school and set an example to younger students. One of the ways that this can be done is through Community Service.

Community Service enables our students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide service to those who need it most. Students at NIS who do community service work learn that they can actually make a difference to the lives of others through their actions and commitment. This helps students better understand their own competences, leading to more self-confidence and a 'can-do' attitude which we believe positively impacts other elements of their school life.

Besides the many personal and social benefits in being enrolled in community service, many colleges / universities include community service as an unofficial requirement for acceptance. More and more university application forms are requesting applicants to describe the extra-curricular activities and community service responsibilities undertaken in their final years at school. To satisfy this requirement, NIS offers a wide range of community service activities to our senior students inside the school. These activities include sports coaching and leadership, assisting in teaching primary children, helping in the science laboratories / libraries, working as an editor for NIS newsletter or termly magazine, working for school media or school event club etc.

Community service also allows our students to take what they've learned and apply it beyond the classroom. This offers the opportunity for enrichment and a great way for them to see how concepts they've learned work in the real world. It also allows our students to build upon their existing skill sets. As students work in a real-life setting, they can use volunteering projects to explore and improve upon existing skills. Students can explore potential careers and find out what they need to develop in order to work in the desired field.

We also offer Students at NIS to get involved in outside community service activities because we believe that that service-learning has a positive effect on students' personal and interpersonal development, including a sense of personal identity, spiritual growth, moral development, the ability to work well with others, and leadership and communication skills.

With the help and guidance of school counselors, students at NIS are required to do a minimum of five hour per year of outside school community work too. School counselors contacting a number of organizations arrange outside community service activities for them. These activities include volunteer work in a hospitals or health care centers, helping people in the community or a charitable organization, doing youth work or some environmental services etc.

As educators, we believe that engaging in community service provides students with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large.
